Born at the château d'Entrecasteaux in Provence, Antoine-Raymond-Joseph de Bruni, chevalier d' Entrecasteaux, entered the navy (1754), where he enjoyed a brilliant career, being named commander of the French fleet in the East Indies (1786-89), then governor of the island of Mauritius (1791). He undertook (1791-93) a voyage to search for the explorer the count de la pérouse, who had last reported from Botany Bay, Australia, in 1788. During the course of this voyage, Entrecasteaux made important contributions to the geographical knowledge of the south Pacific region and, exploring the coasts of many of oceania's islands, discovered the D'Entrecasteaux Islands, now part of Papua-New Guinea. He died at sea during the voyage.
